Finished Book #22: The Joy Luck Club

Last night I finished The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. I decided to count this book in the challenge since, even though I read it about 10 years ago, I still didn't remember any of it while I started reading it. I really liked this book. I loved how it was broke out into separate chapters to tell the stories of the mothers and daughters. It was really interesting to see how critical the mothers were of their daughters. This is a strong part of Chinese culture and something I find fascinating. I wonder how the mothers acted towards their sons. It didn't really touch on that in the book since it was a mother/daughter story.

There were a lot of sad moments in the book, but I found the stories very heartwarming. It gives you a great sense of how important family really is to the mothers in the book. My only complaint is that it was hard to keep the characters straight and to remember which mom and daughter went together. Once I stopped trying to concentrate so hard on that and just enjoy the story, it made the book read a lot faster.
