Book 54: The Cider House Rules

I will be starting 'The Cider House Rules' by John Irving either tonight or tomorrow. I have read a lot of Irving and love his books, but I haven't read this one yet. I saw the movie awhile back, but really don't remember it at all. This is the story of Dr. Wilbur Larch an obstetrician/abortionist and founder and director of the St. Cloud orphanage. It also tells the story of Homer Wells, who is one of the orphans who never gets adopted. I think I remember Wells working in an apple orchard during his teens/early adulthood which is where the title comes from, but I could be wrong.

Since we are moving Friday, I figure it may take me awhile to finish this book. It's a little longer than the last few I read (over 600 pages). I'm thinking I may only get 55 or 56 books in by the end of the challenge.

  1. After one whole month I finally finished this book. Like most of the books I have read by Irving, I absolutely loved it. I truly cannot understand people who do not see his talent as a writer. His stories are always full of comedy, tragedy, sadness, and disturbing images. So many of his novels have a little of everything and this is definitely one of them. And there are also so many good memorable quotes in his novels.

I really liked Homer Wells and Dr. Wilbur Larch, the two main characters in the story. There were also lots of other characters that added to the story. They all seemed to go so well together and provide great conflict as well as loving relationships.

I hadn't remembered much of the movie while I was reading the story. In the back of the book, Irving actually wrote about how the screenplay was different than the novel. So many things were changed and eliminated. I'm so glad I finally finished it. I would say it is one to add to my list of favorite books.
