I am going to start 'The Hotel New Hampshire' by John Irving later today. This is one of Levi's books off our shelf that I haven't read yet. I am trying to find a good, short description of this book, but haven't found one yet. Most reviews say this book is about the Berry family and the dad's idea to run a hotel out of a former girl's boarding school in New Hampshire. There is supposed to be a large focus on each member of the family. I'm interested to see what this story is about.
Here is a quote listed on the back of the book. "The first of my father's illusions was that bears could survive the life lived by human beings, and the second was that human beings could survive a life led in hotels".

I'll be interested to hear how it was and what it's about.
ReplyDeleteWow! This book was strange, disturbing, beautiful, and sad. It's about the Berry family told through one of the son's. He tells about their father being a man always living in the future who has dreams of becoming a successful hotel owner. It seems like there was nothing that didn't happen to this family. It's a story of hotels, bears, rape, death, prostitution, incest, terrorism, love, etc. I couldn't help but love every member of this strange family.
ReplyDeleteI can understand why some people don't like John Irving as his stories are always somewhat morbid and depressing, but I am never bored while reading any of them. He includes so many different elements in all of his stories and I am always impressed with his talent.
I almost picked this up at the library this week, but then I decided to wait to see what you thought of it. Now, I wish I would have just gone ahead and picked it up.
